Life-changing Photography

One of the things that I have always asked God and life is to be put in a place where I can help others. I love telling intentional stories through my work. I consider myself a photographer with purpose because I go beyond the typical professional photography we're used to seeing.

In my heart, I always carry my mission to help, inspire and empower others with my photography. Likewise, I believe photography is an art form with the power to change lives if you allow it to do so.

Let me share these stories that motivate me to continue my journey to capture and preserve our ever-changing moments of life.

It all started in my home country, Nicaragua. While visiting one of the most tourist cities, I came across the reality of those who don't have much. As I walked, I came across a child named Alejandro, who got my attention. Although he was a child in need, he smiled as if he had everything. He saw my camera and was interested in it. So I asked him if he wanted me to take a photo of him, and he said yes. Then I asked his parents if I could, and they approved.

The time I spent taking photos of Alejandro filled my soul. I wanted to help him, and change his reality, but I didn't know how to make that possible. I returned to Puerto Rico, where I lived, and worked on the photos. Each one had such incredible meaning, compiling the emotions and realities of those like Alejandro, who are so happy with having so little. Months later, I found a way to help this child in need by creating "Art Also Changes Lives" (or "El Arte También Cambia Vidas" in Spanish).

For this movement, many joined this vision to share Alejandro's story, thus generating donations for him and his family, which I had the opportunity to give them a year after meeting him. From that day on, my mission as a professional took a complete turn, and I gave myself the noble service of helping others with my camera, empowering women, boosting businesses, and promoting a hand for humanity.

But Alejando’s life isn’t the only one that has inspired me to continue sharing stories worth knowing.

Gabriela Rivera – Ostomized Patient

Gabriela was the first person who believed in my mission to help Alejandro. I met her in a leadership workshop and mentioned his story. She quickly wanted to be part of the mission. She has a foundation called Ostomychic which supports people like her by providing medical supplies and an emotional support network for them.

The first project was to do a photo session so that people who followed Ostomychic's socials knew we were looking for a way to turn a child's life around. From that, we got interviews on television, which helped us gather more donations from viewers who wanted to help.

One of the things I most admire about this extraordinary woman is that her condition does not determine her life quality. She is one of the happiest and most amazingly optimistic people I know. I can confidently say that I'm blessed to have Gabriela as one of the most significant people in my life.

Gina Dacosta – Breast Cancer Patient

When life directs you to serve, you suddenly get ideas of how to help other people in different ways. After Art Also Changes Lives, my desire to help others with my images continued to grow. That's when FEMENI was born. FEMENI is a support network with the mission to empower women in motherhood, business, self-love, resilience, and more. The photo sessions allow women to tell stories to inspire and empower others in the same situation. And be a voice of change for others THROUGH IMAGES OF IMPACT!

Gina, upon learning of my mission with this support network, contacted me because she was looking to tell her story and serve as an inspiration for all those women who come across one of the most challenging realities: battling with cancer.

Her session was very emotional. It was difficult for her because it was a few days after starting chemotherapy, and how everything happened. These photos allowed her to tell her story and uplift other people. Also, these photos encouraged her to accept what she was experiencing at the time. After an arduous fight, Gina is free of cancer. She continues with the noble work of bringing babies into the world as a midwife.

I'm grateful for connecting with Gina and for her to allow me to share her story. I know that one day you will look at these photos and remind yourself of how strong you are!

Iris Coreano - Self Love

How important it is to love ourselves as we are. Nowadays, it's something that everyone tells you to do. However, reaching that personal acceptance is easier said than done. Some of us have reached that personal and life gift. Iris gave her all in her session. I loved the confidence and self-esteem that she projected into each photo, and I loved even more that she used them for the purpose I want my photographs to have, to tell her story.
